H-GAC Livable Centers Study,
Midtown TOD Plan

Houston, Texas

Located immediately south of downtown Houston is Midtown, an emerging arts and entertainment district centered on a series of light rail stops. Design Workshop was retained with Morris Architects to lead an urban design and planning effort for the Midtown area of Houston through the H-GAC Livable Centers program. With commanding views of the downtown skyline, access to a variety of historically and culturally significant neighborhoods, close proximity to Houston Community College and location between downtown and the Medical District, Midtown has the opportunity to emerge as a high quality transit-oriented development along the existing transit line.

Design Workshop led the design efforts for all public spaces including new streets, plazas and parks as well as the urban design framework for the edge conditions of proposed buildings, and alterations of development policy and hurdles. Through intensive analysis of human comfort, urban form, circulation, utilities and infrastructure, connectivity, site sustainability, transit and transportation and building program, the design process has evolved as a holistic and sustainable approach that will encourage pedestrian-friendly redevelopment.
