Town of Avon Comprehensive Plan

Avon, Colorado

After the development of Beaver Creek on the mountain south of town and a major retail center on the outskirts of the community, Avon was faced with trying to maintain – and to some degree create – a distinctive community with a strong identity. Design Workshop worked with the community to create goals and policies that helped to protect the community from homogenized regional growth, refocus development into the community core, and allow enough flexibility for the creative use of architecture and design. The comprehensive plan had to be in harmony with the Town Center Redevelopment the Town was undertaking. In addition, the function of the community as both a workforce community and a gateway to Beaver Creek helped determine the vision of the community – “a great place to live and a great place to visit”.

Despite the fact that the two-year planning effort began with one consultant and was finished by Design Workshop, the plan was unanimously supported by the community, Planning and Zoning Commission and Town Council.
