Austin, Texas
Sitting high above Town Lake, 70 Rainey is a high-rise residential tower in downtown Austin. In a city known for its outdoor culture, the tower is set within the existing oak woodland landscape. It blends the best of luxury living with outdoor amenities on an elevated garden that overlooks the lake and city. Offering 20,000 square feet of private space, the roof garden provides an infinity edge pool, water lounge, outdoor grilling/ entertainment area and a variety of lush garden spaces that include cabanas, fire pits, gaming areas and community gardens. By providing a diversity of private and social spaces, residents of the building can enjoy the outdoors year-round from the serenity and security of this garden in the sky, which has quickly become the address of the rich and famous in Austin.
“If the future of the planet involves high-rise living, there is also a need for elevated green spaces to counteract congestion with verdant, air-purifying sky gardens that allow infill buildings to provide their inhabitants with some semblance of connection to the land. 70 Rainey accomplishes part of this green equation by topping its nine-story garage with a garden that also serves as a buffer between space for vehicles and space for residents. Spread over 9,300 square feet of rooftop elevated 100 feet in the air, the Sky Garden at 70 Rainey mitigates stormwater runoff and propagates pollinator species, wrapping the garage in climbing vines that will eventually blend the tower’s base into the street-level tree canopy.” – National ASLA Professional Awards Jury
