San Diego Riverwalk

San Diego, California

A first-of-its-kind transit-oriented development for San Diegans

The City of San Diego has long been an advocate for smart growth. In an effort to support this mission, Design Workshop is collaborating with Hines and Gensler to tackle the need for more housing by transforming an existing golf course in western Mission Valley into a 200-acre transit-oriented village with a large new public park, residential living, community-oriented retail uses and office space. Anchored by a new San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Green-Line trolley stop and town square, the project is an inspired initiative for a transit-oriented development by providing all daily conveniences within a walkable, vibrant new neighborhood.

Once completed, the new Riverwalk will provide 4,300 residential units and over 1 million square feet of office and retail space connected by an activated public realm. Over 50% of the neighborhood will be dedicated to open space and the restoration of the natural riverfront habitat, interconnected with biking and walking paths for residents to enjoy.

San Diego City Council unanimously approved Riverwalk San Diego and construction will begin in Spring, 2022.
