Steamboat Base Redevelopment

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Fun and function adds to the visitor experience in Ski Town, USA

The 5.5 acre Steamboat Resort Base Area redevelopment project streamlines the arrival process as a visitor enters the resort with functional and artistic design elements to orient and guide them on a clear route to the plaza and ski beach. Program elements to support this vision include a base-wide wayfinding plan, two beautiful and functional screen walls, welcoming lighting, and custom plaza furnishings that warm visitors at the intersection of modernity and the West.

A fully custom ninety foot-long internally lit, perforated metal mural celebrates the culture and history of the Mountain, while providing privacy to the neighboring Sheraton pool. Opposite this wall, a complimenting brand wall modernizes an older building facade while providing an instagram-worthy backdrop connecting the Mountain to the Resort. These walls frame the walk path, functioning as a direct link to the new skier plaza and Mountain beyond. Complementing the new architectural vernacular, signage, lighting, and furnishings allow for a friendly and on-brand immersive experience.

The new wayfinding system was developed with updatability, movability, and the Resort staff and needs in mind. We collaborated with the internal Steamboat sign team to ensure the signs will function as part of the bigger Resort vision and serve them for years to come. Signs are designed so they are fully updatable while being able to withstand an often harsh and diverse climate. This ensures the Resort can limit waste and re-work each season and have the ability to add destinations as they are developed. The result is a better visitor experience and a happy client.
