World War II Memorial

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Designing a space for reflection and remembrance

Design Workshop, in collaboration with artist Larry Kirkland, won a national competition to design the Southwestern Pennsylvania World War II Memorial in downtown Pittsburgh. Inspired by the concepts of duty, honor and country, the Memorial tells the story of Southwest Pennsylvania’s contribution to World War II efforts and the war itself. The stainless-steel spires hold glass and granite panels that describe the War, the region’s role in the conflict, and the sacrifices of local veterans.
